Southwest Airlines will be discontinuing senior fares as of December 11, 2019 as they look to consolidate into three main fare types: Business Select, Anytime, and Wanna Get Away fares.
For those not familiar with Southwest Airlines senior fares, these are offered for those over the age of 65, and typically are slightly less than Anytime fares, however are a lot more than their cheap Wanna Get Away fares.
Notice: As of December 11, 2019, Senior fares are no longer available for purchase. Our Customers mean everything to us. We’re committed to providing friendly, reliable service and low fares with heart. You’ll still get all that with our other fare features.
Here’s what the airline has to say
The final date to book a Senior fare will be December 11, 2019, with a last travel date of May 15, 2020.
In 1983, Southwest started offering discounted fares to seniors (ages 65 years or older) and other “We Care Fares,” such as Military and Youth. After careful evaluation of the revenue, costs, resources, and Customers, the Marketing and Revenue Management teams made the decision to sunset the Senior fare product. The benefits that come with the Senior fare product are just as readily achieved in the Wanna Get Away product with reusable funds and everyday low fares.Â
They continue to raise fares and cut out the things that make them different. Disappointing.
These were great for last minute or refundable tickets. Sad
And I hit 65 in January.
The real benefit of those senior fares, was the ability to cancel at ANY time and get a full refund.
Very disappointing 🙁
