Conquer SPG’s Nice Choice With 9 or 10 Starpoints Per Dollar

I plan to conquer Starwood’s Nice Choice promotion with 10 Starpoints per dollar. The SPG Nice Choice promotion is great because it has something for everyone, even road warriors like Alex and I. We shared how I planned to max out the Hyatt promotion and how Alex ran the table on the Hyatt promotion.

In this post, we’ll share with you how we plan to earn 10 Starpoints per dollar spent at Starwood hotels during the promotional period.

Starwood Platinum Status

Platinum members earn 3 Starpoints per eligible dollar spent at Starwood hotels and resorts. If you are a Platinum with over 75 nights a year, you’ll earn 4 Starpoints per dollar spent.

Three Starpoints per eligible US dollar spent, a 50% bonus over the Preferred level. 4 Starpoints for every eligible US dollar spent – a 100% bonus over the Preferred level, and the richest earning bonus in the hotel industry.

Sub total is 4 Starpoints at this point.

Nice Choice Promotion

The Starwood Nice Choice promotion (Registration Link) offers something for everyone. You are able to select your earning style as well as your earning period. The eligible earning periods include:

  • May 1, 2012, through July 31, 2012 or
  • June 1, 2012, through August 31, 2012 or
  • July 1, 2012, through September 30, 2012

Once you select your earning period it is locked. I selected my earning period for the time which I felt I’d have the most amount of nights in a Starwood Preferred Guest hotel.

Next up was to select the earning style. This was a no brainer for me, I selected the triple Starpoints promotion after 15 nights. But this promotion may not work for everyone so make sure you read the FAQs to determine which promotion is best for you.

With the triple Starpoints promotion, you’ll earn an addition 4 Starpoints per dollar. If you triple the base earning of 2 Starpoints per dollar you’ll end up with 6 Starpoints per dollar. But I already counted the base Starpoints above in the Platinum calculation so the incremental earn is 4 more Starpoints than the base level.

Sub total is 8 Starpoints at this point.

Total Starpoints Per Dollar From Strategy

  • 4 Starpoints Per Dollar From Platinum 75 Night Status (only 3 if you are regular Platinum)
  • +
  • 4 Bonus Starpoints from triple Nice Choice promotion
  • +
  • 2 Bonus Starpoints when you use your SPG American Express card at participating Starwood hotels
  • =
  • 10 Total Starpoints Per Dollar (9 if only a regular Platinum member)

The ability to earn 10 Starpoints per dollar spent at an SPG hotel is amazing. It was too hard to pass up.

Sample Earning

If we assume a 3 night stay in New York at an average rate of $300 per night, that will yield ~9,000 Starpoints ($300 x 3 nights = $900 x 10 Starpoints = 9,000 Starpoints) for a 3 night stay.

Bottom Line

The SPG Nice Choice promotion is a great promotion because it accounts for guests different stay patterns. For us, the promotion influenced us to move our stays over and capitalize on the triple points offer. You can still sign up until June 30, 2012. Make sure you sign up for at least one of the choices otherwise you’ll leave points on the table if you stay during the promotion period.

Which choice is the best match for your stay pattern?

  1. For me the 500 Starpoints per night at a Sheraton are the best choice.
I have only two short stays during the promotion period, one of which is at a Sheraton. The other possible choice would have been the double Starpoints starting with second stay. However, this would yield less points than the 500.
You are right, there are choices for everyone. Even for those with infrequent hotel stays (at Starwood properties).
