Some people call it the Grand Canyon of the Pacific Ocean. Topping out at 3,400 feet, you can get a pretty good view of Kauai from the Waimea Canyon Lookout.
After a quick 45 minute drive from the Grand Hyatt Kauai we found ourselves at the top of the Waimea Canyon State Park Lookout.
Just watch out for Roosters crossing the road on your drive up. Did anyone ever hear the one about why the Chicken crossed the road?
The lookout offers some of the best views of the island.
The canyon is 10 miles wide and spans 1,866 acres.
The canyon was formed by the collapse of the volcano that created the island of Kauai. Then erosion set in over the years further creating the canyon.
Bottom Line
The trip up to the Waimea Canyon Lookout is very easy and kid friendly. The 45 minute drive is well worth the effort as you will be met with spectacular views.
There is plenty more to do and see on the south side of Kauai. What is your favorite activity or place to visit on the south side of Kauai?

Do secret falls kayak.
If the road is ok get to Polihale State park. One of the most magical beaches I have been to anywhere.
I’m sorry you didn’t continue up the road another few miles after the Waimea lookout – the Kalalau lookout at the very end of the road is quite possibly the most beautiful spot on earth. Polihale, as Holiday Baker Man states, is amazing, but check your rental car agreement before you head there, as they will not come to assist if anything happens, and any insurance you might have with them is void should you visit the location
Looks great – we hope to do this very drive soon!
@mommypoints, definitely take the advice to go all the way to the end of this road to the Kalalau lookout. It is spectacular and will give you a good reverse perspective if you also do a Na’Pali coast boatride of some sort.
There’s also a view up at the top of the forbidden island.
And @Mommypoints, we did 12 days in Kauai if you end up going and want to know what we found worth doing.
Great hikes up Waimea Canyon way. We followed the directions in the Kauai Trailblazer guidebook. Knowing where to drive and park and hike useful stuff. Took the boat ride along the Napali Coast at sunset. Another thing to do……dramatic. On the trail you’re looking down, on the boat you can see the knife edged cliffs. Such a spot!
