Southwest Airlines announced this week that they will allow passengers to buy a WiFi option only for iMessages for $2 on any of their WiFi equipped planes. Whether this is just an introductory price or one that will last is unclear.
Normally Southwest charges $8 for WiFi access, so for those wishing only to use iMessages (which can run over WiFi) customers will save 75% off that price.
The story mentions that “Any Apple user that has iOS 5 or later with the iMessage feature pre-loaded on their device can take advantage of this option. Now you can stay powered up and connected to friends and family like you never left the ground.”
They also stated that they will be looking to roll out a similar feature to Android users in 2014.
Southwest Airlines uses satellite-based WiFi which means they can offer customers the opportunity to use approved electronic devices gate-to-gate since WiFi will remain on and accessible for taxi, takeoff, and landing.
Bottom Line
If you don’t want to shell over the extra money for inflight WiFi, but still want to stay connected to your family and friends on the ground, then purchasing this option might be something to consider.
