As previously posted here, American Airlines refreshed their onboard meals for domestic first class, which went into effect on August 1st.
The new menu brings a modern, healthier approach to classic dishes such as lentil chili with polenta cake and shrimp and grits, while introducing new signature dishes and expanding vegetarian options. American stated that they have tweaked the menu to better match their customers’ current dining habits, such as doing away with heavy sauces.
Review: American Airlines First Class Meal
New options include:
- an entree salad with pecan crusted chicken on the side, accompanied by a shrimp cocktail appetizer (lunch)
- beef filet with lobster mac and cheese, accompanied by an appetizer of antipasto skewers (dinner)
- a strawberry ice cream dessert with chocolate shavings by Ben & Jerry’s
We had an opportunity to sample one of the refreshed options this past week on American and found it to be very good! The entree was definitely a vast improvement to what we were used to before. We had their classic shrimp and grits entree and loved it! It definitely seems healthier. One of the things that American had mentioned was that they were doing away with heavier sauces and this meal delivered on that!

Yummy dessert!
Bottom Line
Have you had a chance to experience American’s new meals yet either onboard or in the Flagship Lounges?
I have noticed on all of my recent flights that there has been a DEFINITE improvement to the catering, which we all know had suffered significantly over the last few years. My most recent experience was in Business on AA3, the JFK-LAX transcon, and while I know that the service on that flight is normally more extensive than other domestic services, there was definitely an improvement. If you ever get the chance, do not pass on the lobster risotto!
