I hope this guy had car insurance. As I was walking towards the airport today, I heard a loud smack as I left the Avis lot. The driver in the picture below rammed the lower red and white metal gate as he attempted to leave the Avis lot.

Accident

I’m not sure the accident was entirely his fault. As he was leaving, the upper gate bar raised up, but so did the lower metal gate which he rammed.

As you can see from the picture, the gate attendant was right next to the car as the accident occured. So I couldn’t tell if it was a manual or automated process that raised the lower gate.

Has this ever happened to you or anyone you know?

  1. CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Visa Card – covers as primary. American Express and Visa cover as secondary and only primary if you carry liability only.

  2. Chase United Club Card – primary car rental insurance and metal card so you can use it for some physical protection too (pocket protector, knee defender, etc.) while traveling 🙂

Much better than AMEX’s option as you don’t have to pay extra for it and the card gives you Avis Presidential Preferred status so you get upgraded cars.

  3. SPG with Amex premium car rental protection. I have had to make use of the protection service in the past and it works just as advertised!

  4. I agree, American Express Platinum with Premium Car Rental Protection. A very good value for a rental, long or short time.

  5. Any USAA Credit Card!

Having this card means you are a member, and are eligible for the rental car benefits as well. For Avis it covers: anything >$5,000 damage, Liability insurance, loss of use fees and admin fees waived.

I double this up with the AMEX premium car protection (available on any AMEX card) for $25 per rental period to pay for the first $5,000 🙂

  6. Chase United Explorer, Chase United Club , and Diners Club are 3 cards that offer primary insurance.

  7. This situation still cracks me up every time I re-read it. I’m glad the guy wasn’t hurt, he was in idle mode, but it is still a user error issue with the gate attendant / opener, IMO.
