The W hotel brand has a bit of a reputation for designing hotels that are really cool but over time show their designs as a bit cheap. As a big W fan, I can’t deny those claims. It’s true. I have learned a little trick which is to get to them fast before they wear down. The W Bangkok has been open for about six months now so it still has that new W smell that I love.
At check-in I learned my room would be ready in 5 minutes….so I was invited to enjoy 3 drink coupons for the Woobar. At 10-40 USD per drink (!) I felt that was a nice gesture for the non-existent inconvenience as it was about noon when I was attempting to check-in. To keep things classy I was rolling in with a plastic bag of street food and a two pack of Chang beer purchased at the 7-11 next door.
While I endured the inconvenience, I ordered something obnoxious to make at the bar which included rice, chopped up mangos and a long list of strange fruits I had never heard of.
I was escorted up to a Studio Suite on the 29th floor that had stunning views of Bangkok. I was offered ‘better’ rooms including the Marvelous Suite or Fantastic Suite but both were smoking rooms so that was an easy pass.
This suite doesn’t show an ounce of wear. No signs of the inevitable “W wear down” where the sleekness gets overpowered by the inebriated young money clientele. This spotless room was a real treat!
As usual, it’s a million degrees and humid here so I am off to the submarine, veterinary clinic , pool.
Have a great time! Any chance you’re familiar with the Le Meridien Bangkok? I’m trying to decide between the W and LM for an upcoming stay…
Must go there!
That tub is AMAZING!
@Brian – I have only personally done the St. Regis and the W in Bangkok. I sent a friend to Le Meredien last month because of other reviews I had read but that friend was a little disappointed with his stay. A lot of it will depend on quality vs. location. This W is an incredible property but I know that Le Meredien is closer to some of the top tourist areas.
@Marshall Jackson – Hurry!
@Erica – Not too shabby, eh?
