Huge Changes To Delta & Asiana Airlines Announced

A few airline updates have been announced in the last few days and they haven’t been all good news.

Delta Increases Their Business Elite Award Prices

As has been reported in a few other places, Delta will increase the amount of miles they require for award flights that fly after June 1, 2014.

This isn’t good news for Delta members. For example, a Business Class award from the US to Europe currently requires 100,000 miles but after the change it will require 125,000 miles, a 25% increase. Not good, wonder what’s next?

Asiana Airlines Announces Huge Change

In related airline  news, Asiana Airlines announces a huge change.

Asiana is changing the available times when customers can assign seats.

Somehow I have a feeling the Asiana change won’t concern people as much as the Delta change.

  1. Another reason why I am not suggesting to my readers to collect Delta SkyPesos. Most if not all my readers are leisure travelers and this Delta change is insane.

  2. This reminds me of my first AA check in when I discovered that *all* checked bags were incurring charges, instead of just the ones checked in with sky caps. Within a year all of the other airlines were doing the same thing. I wonder how long until all my miles are worth $.75 on the dollar 🙁

  3. One could probably have seen this coming if one checked AF’s Flying Blue site for availability with Skymiles as it started a few weeks ago showing 125K round trip for flights to Europe.

I don’t think of myself as a hoarder but I do still have some paper statements from Delta going back to ’94 when a move to Atlanta resulted in lots of flying with them.

Know how much a biz award was then? It was 75K (actually buy two for 150K) but that jumped soon after to 80K, then 90K soon after the millennium. It was after 2006 sometime (when I last redeemed at 90K) that it went to 100k, which I was able to do once in 2012. So, my nearly 600K are now worth 4.8 trips instead of 6. Crikey, as the Brits might say. What to do? I just booked my upcoming weekend trip ATL-EWR on UA. Hey, I’ve got only silver status there but I’m all done with Delta.
