Delta flight 3 from London-New York (JFK) earlier this week landed at Terminal 4 but somehow the passengers were let into the domestic terminal without having to go through customs or immigration.
According to this CBS News story, Delta Air Lines said that “a small number of customers off Delta flight 3 from London to New York’s Kennedy International Airport were able to bypass customs screening. Delta is working with the Port Authority as well as Customs and Border Protection and is looking into the matter. Customer security is of vital importance and Delta makes every effort to follow appropriate procedures.”
The names of passengers who didn’t go through customs or immigration were finally sent back to it while they were at baggage claim but the story notes that those without checked baggage could of just left.
What would you do if you found yourself in this situation? Does the blame go to Delta or is the Port Authority of New York’s fault?

Oops. Wonder if it was a gate agent that opened the wrong door off the jetway.
Happened to me at EWR. We taxi’ed at a domestic gate but took the stairs off the plane into a waiting bus. There were plenty of customs officers watching us.
Happened to me once at GVA many years ago. Was part of a 100 strong university ski group. We were just following the others when we found ourselves on the street on the French side. We had great trouble getting back in to collect our bags which were within the secure area on the Swiss side.
There are gates in FRA which can be configured in different ways, it is more an issue of keeping certain areas super sterile for USA flights.
I believe the Germans can handle this, T-4 is not as well run.
I tuly hope DL is penalized for this snafu.
JFK T4 is run by Schipol, a well regarded operator.
Schipol …. you mean that nice little airport in Europe with such lax security it let the shoe bomber board the plane and nearly blew it up ?
Yes. Have you ever been to CPH?
No airports had procedures to check shoes at that time. If you’d been to CPH, you’d know they have at-gate security. You’d also know that no airport had procedures to check shoes for explosives (other than TLV).
I wish every airport was run as well and profitably as CPH.
You should check it out.
