Could This Be One of The Best Hyatt Hotel Redemption: Andaz Peninsula Papagayo

It’s Friday, and if you’re like me you can’t wait for the weekend. That got me thinking where are some good long weekend destinations to go to. There are plenty of options from city hotels, mountain hotels, hotels with casinos and of course beaches.

That’s when I realized that the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica dropped from a Category 6 hotel to a Category 4 hotel.

What does this mean?

As a Category 4 property now, the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo is available for 15,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points per night. If you’d rather use cash and points, it would be only $100 plus 7,500 points per night.

In my opinion, the Cash and Points option is probably one of the best choices here, since you would be earning stay/night credit for elite status and you could apply a Diamond Suite upgrade to your reservation as well if you are a Hyatt Diamond member.

As a Hyatt Diamond member, you do the cash and points option to redeem 7,500 points plus $100 per night and then use a Diamond Suite upgrade to get into the Andaz Suite which is normally $695 per night.

Have you been to the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo?

  1. Absolutely a steal at category 4 redemption rates.

I had a great stay there in January. Regular Diamond upgrade was to a room with a fantastic view of the water. Amenity was nice bottle of white and chocolates. Service was impeccable.

The food was merely ok at the resort itself, although we had rented a car and ate off site most meals. The rental was very expensive with insurance, so I’m not sure I’d do that on a follow up trip.

Facilities were also all in pristine condition.

I think the only real challenge that the property will have is that it is in a sort of weird location for leisure travelers who would be willing to pay $600+/night. It’s certainly not as nice as the Four Seasons, it isn’t very easy to get to, the beach is not very good, and there aren’t a whole lot of upscale activities off resort. To be honest, I’m not completely sure why someone would go to Papagayo over Maui, except to use points. For those on the east coast, I suppose it’s a bit closer. And, you can leverage Avios to fly MIA to LIR, which is an excellent deal.

I’ll likely be back on points. I just won’t rent a car this time.

  2. You can also redeem the free cat 1-4 bonus night that is included annually with the Hyatt credit card. Sounds like a great value for the $75 annual fee.

  3. I’m starting to think more about this as a destination (direct flight from DFW), but if the beach isn’t good, I wouldn’t want to drive, I worry I would feel isolated without much to do. Maybe just a place to enjoy the hotel and resort for like a long weekend.
