A few weeks ago we shared how you can cancel award for free from Air France. Since I credit all of the miles I earn through Rocketmiles and have the ability to transfer Amex points earned through generous bonuses like the 150,000 Platinum Amex bonus, I always have enough Air France miles on hand to book an award, especially when AMAZING promotions come along like 12,500 miles for a one-way ticket from the U.S. to pretty much anywhere in Europe, Moscow, Tel Aviv, Turkey or even North Africa.
But I have never cancelled an Air France award for free, so it was about time I tried it.
My Air France Award Cancellation Experience
I first booked an award with Air France for a flight I thought I was actually going to take on May 23rd for a flight just 2 days later. Within 24 hours of booking Air France allows award cancellations for free. So when I found out the next day that I wouldn’t be taking the flight, I called up Air France’s North America phone line and asked to cancel the flight.
The flight was cancelled and I received an email instantly letting me know the flight was cancelled, but no mention of the points in the email. I waited two days then I found this little nugget in my Air France account, the 25 miles were deposited back into my account on May 26th, just 2 days after I cancelled the flight.
Bottom Line
The Air France free cancellation policy works. It took two days for the miles to be put back into my account, but those two days were weekend days. So your experience may vary.
Has anyone tried to cancel a flight during the business week and got their miles back faster than 2 days?
Cancelled an Air France award booking on a business day and miles were back in account within 1 hour – even though being advised it could take up to 90 minutes.
