Now through July 31, 2014, American Airlines is offering a bonus on purchased American AAdvantage miles. This is a tiered bonus meaning the more miles you buy the more you’ll receive.

American bonus miles

Here’s how the bonus structure is set up:

  • Buy 16,000-20,000 miles and receive 2,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 21,000-30,000 miles and receive 4,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 31,000-40,000 miles and receive 7,000 bonus miles
  • Buy 41,000-54,000 miles and receive 10,000 bonus mile
  • Buy 55,000+ miles and receive 16,500 bonus mile

This promotion is hard coded through points.com meaning there is no need to register to take advantage of it.

Purchased miles can take up to 72 hours to post to your account, so keep that in mind if you were looking to book an award right after. Also American limits purchased miles to only 60,000 miles per year.

Bottom Line

If you were to buy 55,000 miles, you would be receiving a total of 71,500 with this offer. The price for those would come out to $1,660.94 meaning you would be buying them at a cost of 2.32 cents per mile.

Depending on the type of award you wanted to redeem for, it may or may not be worth it. I wouldn’t buy these miles just to get them, but if you are within reach to a desired award then it might be worth it.

If you’re looking for an easier way to earn American AAdvantage miles, the Citi Platinum Select / AAdvantage World Signature Card is offering 30,000 bonus miles after spending $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months.

  1. Unless it was a really short-term need, I’d buy US Airways miles through their promo (though as you point out, neither is a particularly attractive price point)
