Positive Change: Delta Lowers SkyMiles Redemptions on these Routes

Per Delta Points, it appears that there might be a positive change to their SkyMiles redemptions on at least one route. Delta shuttle flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco (which are not a mix of E175’s and B717’s) are being offered for as low as 5,000 SkyMiles each-way. Other routes within California and the Pacific Northwest are also being offered for 5,000 miles.

As a reminder, we’ve written about in the past how Delta was offering 10,000 SkyMiles awards each-way on select routes, but 5,000 miles each-way is the lowest that I’ve seen an award.

If you’re a Delta Diamond, Platinum or Gold Medallion member, you’re eligible for a complimentary upgrade on an award ticket on this route as well, so for 5,000 SkyMiles, you could be able to score a first class seat even!

Delta is now flying Boeing 717’s on their about half of their shuttle flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Bottom Line

Taking a look at some award flights, I found plenty of availability of these new awards for just 5,000 SkyMiles each, and hey for some Medallions, this means possibly even in First Class!

What are your thoughts on these new discounted 5,000 SkyMiles awards?

  1. The routes bookable at 5000 points normally price out to $70 per ticket. How is that a good deal? Even with sky pesos it makes sense to purchase a ticket at these redemption rates. Conversely, short haul routes that are expensive to purchase are not available for 5000 points. Delta may advertise 5000 point redemptions as a new benefit of its rewards program, but I only think it reinforces how crappy their program really is.
