Currently, UberX and UberPool are banned at LAX, meaning if you’re hoping to get one Uber’s cheaper options you’re out of luck as you can only take a UberSelect or above car from LAX. However, even though it’s banned at LAX, there is a workaround.
Not necessarily a trick, since I know several people who do this, but if you want to get a cheap UberX or UberPool from LAX, here’s what you can do. Once you arrive head down to the hotel shuttles and take one to a nearby hotel, where you can then request an UberX or UberPool from.
There are many you could take, some I would recommend are the Sheraton Gateway, Westin LAX, Concourse Hotel at LAX, Four Points LAX, Courtyard by Marriott LAX, Embassy Suite LAX etc.
If you try to request an UberX or UberPool from the airport, it literally blocks you from doing it, so must leave the airport.
Last night I did this successfully, and it was funny the other person I was sharing a ride with, also took a hotel shuttle and then requested Uber.
In addition, if you haven’t tried Uber yet, you can get a $20 credit on your first ride when you sign up here.
Bottom Line
Even though UberX and UberPool aren’t allowed at LAX right now, that doesn’t mean you can’t get one. Uber used to offer $5 pool rides on the West Side, but has ended that promotion.
Have you tried this strategy before? Feel free to share any others that have worked for you!
If you are arriving at LAX during the wee hours, when the wait for a shuttle can exceed 10 minutes, or perhaps you just want to add a little extra exertion to your trip, simply walk to the new Hyatt Hotel (formerly the dismal Radisson), and hail your Über from there. It’s a mere three-minute stroll from Terminal 1.
A much better and easier way I feel is going to the Car Rental place and requesting Uber there. Many taxis line up in that area at LAX. So chances of scoring a ride quickly are better.
