Hyatt Announces 2016 Hotel Category Changes

Hyatt has announced their category changes for 2016, which go into effect for bookings starting August 1, 2016. In total 50 hotels will move to a higher award category and 56 hotels will move to a lower award category.

50 hotels will move to a higher award category. Free night award redemptions at these hotels will require additional Hyatt Gold Passport points effective 12:01 am CST, August 1, 2016:

Bottom Line
If you are looking to make a points redemption reservation at one of the hotels that is going up in category; you should really do it before August 1st so that you can save on points! If you are planning on making a reservation at one of the hotels that is going down in category; go ahead and make your reservation now but, make sure to call after August 1st and change the reservation to get the lower category redemption.

  1. This might be slightly OT but how do they determine what the points cost should be? Higher the price – Higher the cost in points?

    If that is the case here is an interesting anomaly in that that scenario…
    Hyatt Place Downtown the Loop is going for $324 and 12,000 points
    Hyatt Place River North is going for $247 and 15,000 points.

    These are category changes, not price changes. Irrespective of the price, the number of points for redemption is based on the category.
