There are many ways how to avoid checked bag fees on Delta Air Lines. The airline normally charges $25 each way for the first checked bag when flying Main Cabin or Comfort Plus on domestic flights.
If you fly several times a year this cost can quickly add up to several hundred dollars. Fortunately, there are several ways you can avoid paying a checked baggage fee when flying Delta domestically.
Delta Co-Branded Credit Cards: Â Additionally, if you are flying with a family or friends, you get one complimentary checked bag for up to eight other passengers on your reservation. You do not have to purchase the trip with the Delta co-branded American Express credit card to get the free checked back, simply have the card in good standing.
Delta Medallion Status: Delta has four tiers of elite status starting with Silver, followed by Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Silver Medallion members are entitled to one free checked bag. This benefit applies to up to 8 travel companions on a Medallion Member’s reservation for a total of 9 passengers. Gold Medallion members receive two free checked bags, while Platinum and Diamond Medallion can check three free checked bags that each weigh up to 70lbs.
SkyTeam Elite Status: Delta is part of the SkyTeam Alliance and SkyTeam Elite and SkyTeam Elite Plus members receive one free checked bag when flying Delta domestically.
Paid Premium Cabin Fares: Delta passengers who book a First Class domestic ticket are entitled to three free checked bags up to 70lbs each. This may be a great option if you have several checked bags for a trip.
Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum Status: If you’re a Starwood Preferred Guest Platinum Elite member and have signed up for the Crossover Rewards Program, you receive a free checked bag when flying on a Delta domestic flight. This benefit is extended up to three other passengers traveling on your reservation.
Active Military: If you are on personal travel and flying Delta Airlines as Active Duty Military, you are eligible for two free checked bags. If a flight is for military orders, Delta gives five free checked bags up to 100lbs each.
