The W New York, the original W property in the brand, is leaving W Hotels on May 9, 2018, as it transitions over to the The Maxwell Hotel, Tribute Portfolio, which falls under the Starwood Preferred Guest umbrella. The property was recently sold and these changes come under the new ownership.
This marks the first Tribute Portfolio property in New York City. With this change, the good news is that those with upcoming reservations should not be affected, as you’ll continue to receive SPG benefits here and earn points. SPG award reservations will be honored, as the property will remain a SPG Category 5 with free night awards starting at 12,000-16,000 SPG point per night.
Check out our recent stay:Â Hotel Review: The Maxwell, New York City, Tribute Portfolio, to see how it compares to when it once was a W.
W Hotels will still retain the following properties in the NYC area:
Per their website, Brand Change Effective May 9, 2018: W New York will be transitioning to The Maxwell New York City on May 9, 2018 and will no longer be affiliated with W Hotels & Resorts. Reservations for dates on or after May 9, 2018 will continue to be eligible for Starwood Preferred Guest® membership benefits, award redemption, and Starpoints® accrual.
When it comes to other hotel changes, you’ll recall Highgate Hotels recently took over the Gansevoort Park Aveneue hotel overnight, so it seems like that may be the case here once this transition happens. The Ritz-Carlton Battery Park is now The Wagner Hotel as the hotel ownership group Highgate continues to purchase more properties in NYC. See also our Hotel Review: W New York
Have you recently stayed at the Maxwell New York yet? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
I am really worried. Stayed at the W in March/April 2017. Outstanding as you will see from my TripAdvisor review. We have decided to return this December for our 50th anniversary since we met. The superb service that we received from the W not only made us decide to stay there but actually made us decide to return to New York. It was that good. So I’m now very worried that we won’t be looked after that well now
