On the heel’s of Delta Announces Expanded Transatlantic Service and American Airlines Launches Several New Routes to Europe, United Airlines announced they’ll be adding new nonstop service between Washington Dulles International Airport and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport starting May 22, 2019.

United’s new service from Washington Dulles will be onboard their Boeing 777-200ER, and will be operated as a redeye both to Tel Aviv and on the return. United currently also serves Tel Aviv from Newark and San Francisco.

United Airlines today announced it will begin its 20th year of service to Israel with a new nonstop flight between its hub at Washington Dulles International Airport and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport starting May 22, 2019 – subject to government approval. The new flight will be the first to be operated by a U.S. carrier between the two cities.

Offering more nonstop service between the United States and Tel Aviv than any other U.S. airline, United’s new route to Tel Aviv will be the carrier’s fourth flight to Israel. United currently operates twice-daily service between New York/Newark and Tel Aviv and daily nonstop service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv.

“As we begin celebrating 20 years of service in Israel, we want to thank our customers and employees who have helped make United the top U.S. airline serving Israel,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network. “We thank the Israeli government for its ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to continuing to serve Israel with this new service for our customers traveling between the U.S. capital and one of the most advanced science and technology sectors in the world.”

With Delta’s announcement with their 2nd daily flight from New York (TLV), we’ll be seeing a decent increase in seats to Israel next summer, which could make the success of United’s new route a possible gamble, when it comes to being profitable for them.

When it comes to connecting traffic, United already serves Tel Aviv both from Newark and San Francisco, which are much larger hubs for the airline, so I don’t anticipate that United will be banking on much new connecting traffic here, that isn’t already offered through Newark.

As this is still pending government approval, it doesn’t appear that tickets are yet for sale on this route.
