With British Airway’s distance award chart, award travel on American Airlines operated flights are a great way to redeem Avios. While British Airways doesn’t offer their lowest tier of award redemptions for domestic US flights, passengers can still book awards flights starting at 7,500 Avios in economy for flights up to 1,151 miles.
For reference, United domestic saver awards start at 10,000 award miles for flights under 700 miles and 12,500 for longer flights.
While Delta doesn’t publish an award chart, they occasionally have specials redemption offers as low as 5,000 miles, but redemption can vary widely. American Airlines, a oneworld alliance partner with British Airways has domestic MilesAAaver awards start at 7,500 award miles for flights under 500 miles and 12,500 for longer flights.
The British Airways Executive Club award chart uses peak rates for award partners and is calculated based on the distance of each flight in an itinerary.
For example, if you are flying from Cleveland (CLE) to New Orleans (MSY) with a connection in Chicago (ORD), the redemption rate will be calculated by adding the Avios required for a flight from Cleveland (CLE) to Chicago (ORD) and the Avios required for a flight from Chicago (ORD) to New Orleans (MSY).
To maximize the redemption value of British Airways Avios, it’s recommended to use them on a flight that is departing or arriving from an American Airlines hub. This includes Charlotte (CLT), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Phoenix (PHX), Miami (MIA), Philadelphia (PHX), Washington D.C. (DCA) and New York (JFK and LGA).
American Airlines has an extensive route offering with over one hundred destinations across the United States. Below are a few examples of award redemptions for 7,500 avios and $5.60 for taxes and fees (British Airways doesn’t have a fuel surcharge on American Airlines domestic awards)
New York (LGA) to Nashville (BNA)
Seattle (SEA) to Phoenix (PHX)
Asa a reminder both American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to British Airways. For those looking to transfer to airline partners check out how to Transfer American Express Membership Rewards to Airline Partners, and Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to Airline Partners.
If you’re looking to redeem your credit card points or British Airways Avios miles for free flights, we recommend using the Juicy Miles award booking service, who can help you redeem for the lowest amount of miles, as well as using partner airlines.
No award chart is perfect and there are instances where using British Airways Avios for quick domestic flights will not make sense. Overall the award chart offers several sweet spots and will generally require less miles then using a legacy carrier award program for flights less than 2,000 miles.
Can these trips be booked online at aa.com? When I log in and try to redeem miles, it only shows AA redemptions. Does the trip need to be booked through BA’s website? Or is it necessary to call AA or BA to book the trip with Avios?
