Passengers at Phoenix Sky Harbor are experiencing flight delays this morning due to the extreme cold weather last night. Temperatures dropped as low as 29 degrees, causing frost on the wings. Apparently the airport doesn’t have proper de-icing capabilities, as there are unusual weather conditions here.

Many airlines this morning are having delays including Alaska Airlines, Delta, Southwest, American Airlines, and United as a result.

Several flights this morning are being held until after sunrise in an attempt for the sun to melt the frost off the the aircrafts including the wings and the flight control surfaces.

As an example, Delta 2162 from Phoenix to Atlanta is experiencing over a 90 minute delay due to waiting for the frost to melt off the wings.

  1. I just flew back from PHX on Monday. The weather there has been unusually cold. We stayed in Mesa and had frost on our car every morning. It was 45 and raining New Years Eve afternoon.
