Two Positive Southwest Airlines Cancellation Changes

Southwest Airlines has announced two positive changes when it comes to their cancellation policy on pet fees as well as unaccompanied minor fees. Starting this year, both pet fares and unaccompanied minor charges are now refundable, whether voluntary cancellation or involuntary flight cancellation such as weather.

Per Southwest Airlines,

We are excited to announce that as of January 1, Pet fares and Unaccompanied Minor (UM) charges are refundable! 

Customers may obtain a refund for their Pets fare ($95 each way) for the following reasons:

  • The Customer cancels their reservation and the pet does not travel
  • The Customer’s flight is canceled and they elect not to rebook

Customers may obtain a refund for their Unaccompanied Minor charge ($50 each way) for the following reasons:

  • The Customer cancels their reservation and the UM does not travel
  • The Customer’s flight is canceled and they elect not to rebook
  • The child is joined by an accompanying passenger age 12 or older and is no longer an Unaccompanied Minor
