There are many amazing places around Asia to visit. A lot of cities are in locations that require flights to reach conveniently and in a reasonable time period. The oneworld alliance has three Asia partner airlines including Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Malaysia Airlines. As a member of the alliance, British Airways Avios can be used to redeem flights on these partners.
British Airways uses a distance-based award chart for redemptions and each segment’s distanced is used independently for the total award calculation. This means a trip from Ho Chi Minh (SGN) to Bali (DPS) with a connection in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) would have two segments and price at . For this reason, the best use of British Airways Avios is from hub cities of the oneworld airline partners.
To book a partner flight, first login to British Airways Executive Club. If you not created an account with British Airways, you can create one for free.Select your departure and arrival airports and enter the date of the flight. Make sure to check ‘One Way Only’ to have more flexibility. It does not matter which class you select as all available cabins will be displayed.
For this example, the trip is from Hong Kong (HKG) which is Cathay Pacific’s hub to Bangkok (BKK). This route has several flights daily at varying hours. Depending on the aircraft, some will feature a Premium Economy in additional to Business and Economy class.
The distance for this route is less 1,150 miles which means it will price at 15,000 British Airways Avios. When redeeming Avios, all oneworld partners will price at peak rate for each distance zone. British Airways does charge $57 for taxes and fees with flight as well. (Economy and Premium Economy would price at 7,500 and 11,250 respectively)
A quick search for the cash-equivalent ticket price at the time of this blog post shows that the flight would cost $1,167. This is a value of ~7.4 cents per avios ($1110/15,000)! There are numerous excellent routes to maximize value in Asia with British Airways Avios. If flying between cities that are not oneworld hubs or having to take a connecting flight for the trip, Avios may not be ideal.
If you’re looking to redeem your British Airways Avios for Asia flights, we recommend using the Juicy Miles award booking service, who can help you redeem for the lowest amount of miles while searching availability on partner airlines.
