Delta Air Lines announced they’re slashing their current $150 sporting equipment fee in exchange for standard baggage prices. For non-Medallions, this means the fee would now just be $30, the price of a regular checked bag.

For Medallion members, you’ll be able to check surfboards, bicycles, golf clubs, scuba gear and other large-sized sporting equipment all free of charge.

Per Delta,

Delta customers traveling with surfboards, bicycles, golf clubs, scuba gear and other large-sized sporting equipment will now be allowed to check them as part of their standard baggage allowance.

The airline is eliminating the $150 specialty sports bag fee previously charged for these items, effective for travel worldwide on tickets purchased beginning July 17, 2019. Customers will instead pay a first, second or third checked bag fee according to the fare rules associated with their booking and/or SkyMiles Medallion status.

Complete checked baggage fee detail, including the new sporting equipment fees, can be found at Delta.com. Due to space limitations, acceptance and charges may vary for itineraries on a Delta Connection carrier.

Cheers to Delta for making this customer friendly change. I know a lot of people who are traveling on holiday who check golf clubs, so now there is no longer a higher fee associated with this.

It will be interesting to see how American Airlines and United respond to this news, and if they too drop their sporting equipment checked baggage fees.

  1. Feels like back to the future as all this stuff was free 25 years ago. Also very Smart. Customer who play golf, ski, bicycle etc are generally high income and don’t want to be nickel and dimed when they jet off to Aspen or Hilton Head. Hopefully copycats at UA and AA will be forced to fall in line.

And we can all thank WN where ski and golf equipment have been free forever.

  2. AA cut the sports equipment fee earlier this year so that checking in say a bike would only be subject to regular baggage fees (if any); and AA did it before DL did.
