Embarking on the Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Challenge

If you’re looking to earn Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status, you’d normally need to stay 50 nights throughout the year. An easier option is to complete a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Challenge, where you just need to stay 16 nights within 90 days of enrolling.

In order to enroll for the challenge, you must do so on the phone by calling Marriott Bonvoy, who will be able to enroll you. Unlike some of the other hotel chains, this isn’t a status match, so you don’t need to have elite status with another hotel company, however you won’t be granted the status immediately, only after completing the 16 nights.

According the phone representative and from other reports, if you sign up for the Platinum Status Challenge now and complete it, your status would be good for all of 2020, 2021 and through February 2022.

After enrolling by the phone, I’d recommend reaching out to their Marriott Bonvoy Assist to confirm you’re in enrolled:

  1. Very good information. Any idea about other restrictions? For instance, can you do this if your platinum status just expired? Is there a limit to how many times or how often this can be done?

  2. Do award nights count, if you use travel certs (the 7 nights that come with a fly and stay package, for example?)

  3. I have four years running on platinum. However, with the removal of the meeting trick, I probably won’t make it past 2020. I barely made it (50 nights on the nose with a December meeting) in 2019.

How do these challenges work with trying to get to lifetime platinum?

I called once, was told that you currently could not be platinum to do the platinum challenge. You have to drop to gold first, which also puts you back one more year on total years….

  4. Would have been better to wait until today. I have until April 30 to complete the challenge. Apparently it’s best to start on the 2nd or later. Technically mine starts on January 4th.

  5. Yes, I was confused when I was told until April 30th, but happy for the extra days!

    Thanks for the info!

  6. Okay, I’m confused and in need of a clarification. I just called Marriott Platinum line (i’m still platinum but will be back to gold after end of Feb 2020) and they told me I’m not eligible for the challenge. Now I’m sure I haven’t attempted the challenge within the past 3 years BUT they told me YOU MUST NOT BE PLATINUM AT ALL within the PAST 5 YEARS in order to be qualified for the challenge.

This clearly contradicts what the article shows so what do I do? Did I just get a dumb representative and should ask for a supervisor or this article is not updated.

I have Lifetime Gold but we Divas know, we ain’t gonna settle for that crap!

  7. Hi,
If I take plat challenge in October 2 2020, so I should get October, November, December and January 2021 to complete the challenge ? And my status should be active for whole of 2021, 2022, and Feb 2023 ?
