Delta Air Lines has rolled out a new feature for Platinum and Diamond Medallions who wish to redeem their upgrade certificates online. Top tier elite members will now be able to apply upgrade certificates to reservations online at time of booking.
Platinum and Diamond Medallion members have the ability to choose Regional and Global upgrades as Choice Benefits, however previously to use these upgrades, you had to call the Medallion line and manually have the upgrade applied.
Currently through the website, Global and Regional upgrade certificates can only be applied to new booking, so if you have an existing reservation that you wish to upgrade, you’ll still need to do so over the phone.
Additionally, the Fly Delta app doesn’t allow for these upgrade certificates to be applied, but both will be added in the future to make this more seamless. It also doesn’t appear to differentiate which upgrade certificate is being applied or waitlisted, so should you already have one upgrade certificate waitlisted on another booking, there’s no way to indicate that at this time.
How to Earn Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates:
As a Choice Benefit selection, Diamond Medallion Members may choose any of the following three options:
- Four (4) Global Upgrade Certificates
- Eight (8) Regional Upgrade Certificates
- Two (2) Global and four (4) Regional Upgrade Certificates
Platinum Medallion Members may choose four (4) Regional Upgrade Certificates
For those looking to redeem upgrade certificates on a future booking, you’ll now be able to request the upgrade online, eliminating the need to call into reservations, which seems like a win for both elite members as well as reservation agents.
I’d expect to see additional features added next year as technology allows including adding these to existing reservations as well as through the Fly Delta app.
