Kauai’s North Shore offers some of the most dramatic scenery of all the islands with cliffs, mountains and beautiful beaches, you are sure to find what you are looking for in your trip to this area of the island. We found a few places that make a trip to the North Shore of Kauai a worth while day trip.
Hideaways Beach (Secret Beach)
Hideaways Beach, otherwise known as Secret Beach is a generally calm water beach. You’ll have to know where you are going to get here, but there is a small parking lot located near the entrance. We were one of only several people on the beach the day we visited. It sure was a secret that day.
Hanalei Bay Beach
Hanalei Bay Beach is a 2 mile long half moon shaped beach. The St Regis and a number of houses are along this beach. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch a rainbow.
One Lane Bridge
The drive along the North Shore was always interesting. At one point, you’ll come to a one lane bridge. There is etiquette here to follow. If you approach the bridge and there is a car coming across you are expected to wait until the last car comes across. If you approach the bridge and the traffic is going across the bridge from your side, you are expected to continue across following the last car. So it’s kind of like a conga line across the bridge.
Be careful to not get distracted while driving. It’s not hard, so I suggest you take turns driving in and out so all in the car can take in the view.
Tunnels Beach
Tunnels Beach is all the way towards the end of the drive on the North Shore near Ke’e beach.
Ke’e Beach
Ke’e Beach is the end of the road before you get to the trail to Hanakapiai beach. The water was calm and there were plenty of families snorkeling. But do note that there can be an undercurrent the farther away from the beach you get.
Bottom Line
A visit to the North Shore beaches is a great way to spend one or more days. For me, I enjoyed our time most at Hideaways beach.
What’s your favorite beach on the North Shore?

I quite enjoyed the first 1 mile hike from Ke’e Beach toward Kalalau. It was also VERY nice to relax inside the reef at Ke’e Beach after the hike. For those considering doing this hike, it’s not too bad if you turn around once the trail starts going back downhill, but make sure to bring shoes that can get muddy, and be careful on the rocky areas after you’ve been in the mud. Muddy soles + rocks = skating rink!
Nice job on our local North Shore beaches. We also like Lumahai for a little natural excitement, and Wainiha because no one is ever there. 🙂
Hi Autolycus – Nice tip.
Hi Betsy – Thanks, thanks for the other beach names.
Love the reviews. I’m planning a trip to Kauai and this helps tremendously!
