I shared a step by step process a few months back on how to save 15,000 miles for a First Class award ticket in American Airlines new A321 Flat Bed First Class Transcontinental flight. But now thanks to the new US Airways buy mile promotion until March 26th, the same First Class can be outright bought for only ~$940 plus the award booking fees ($35).
Step 1: Buy Miles (optional)
- Navigate To The US Airways Purchase / Gift website and log in to your account to see if you’ve been targeted for the 100% bonus
- Buy 25,000 Miles, Get 25,000 Bonus Miles (for 50,000 total)
- Then follow the next few steps below to book an award ticket in American Airlines new First Class
Offer available for purchases made between March 1st 00:00:01 PT and March 26th 2014, 23:59:59 PT. All purchases are non-refundable. Bonus miles will be awarded upon completion of the transaction. The maximum number of Buy and Gift Bonus miles that can be received by one member for this offer is 50,000 bonus miles. For Gift purchases, bonus will be awarded to the recipient. All miles purchased beyond this limit will not be eligible for a bonus. All transaction inquiries must be submitted to US Airways Dividend Miles within 90 days from end of promotion. Offer is subject to change. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. Share transactions are not eligible for bonus. Only purchases made online are eligible for the bonus. Please note that Dividend Miles accounts less than 12 days old are not permitted to Buy, Share or Gift miles. For Gift and Share transactions, the recipient account must also be 12 days old. All US Airways Dividend Miles terms and conditions apply.
Step 2: Search For Award Flights On US Airways
Navigate to US Airways and search for your desired award flight dates. Make sure you select “flexible dates” so you can see the award calendar.
Step 3: View Availability
I’m seeing exceptional availability in First Class on American Airlines new A321 operated flights. If there is a question, refer to the plane type on the flight and make sure it is listed on AA’s website as a 32B aircraft type. This is the new plane type for American’s Transcontinental flight.
Step 4: Confirm Cabin
The cabin should state “First”. You can view this by selecting the flight number to the left side of the screen. It will book into Z class, which is the same class that American Airlines books into for the First Class seat on this plane.
Step 5: Book & Compare Savings
American Airlines requires 65,000 AAdvantage miles plus $5 in taxes for this flight while US Airways only requires 50,000 Dividend Miles plus $30 in taxes and booking fees for the same flight. The 15,000 mile savings is definitely worth the extra $25 in taxes and booking fees. Both flights are booking into Z class in First Class.
Bottom Line
The integration of US Airways and American Airlines is underway and you can book tickets on American Airlines and US Airways. Until the integration is fully completed, this is an option to save miles on American Airlines First Class by using US Airways miles.

Wow. Great fares. Could one pay cash for first class, credit the miles to us and get the 50% additional miles toward status on us as you can when you fly paid first on us? That looks to be about 7300 pqm which is just south of flying to Europe in coach.
