Points, Miles, Martinis contributor, Nicky, shares his thoughts from a recent visit at The Palace Hotel, San Francisco.

The Palace Hotel in San Francisco, a part of The Luxury Collection, is one of San Francisco’s historic hotels. It’s a Starwood Category 6 property meaning free night awards start at 20,000 SPG points per night.

If you’re looking for a way to earn more Starpoints, you may want to consider the Starwood credit cards, Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express and the Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express.

Located in the Soma area, it is also a great option for both business and leisure guests.  Amenities include the Pied Piper bar, Garden Court for afternoon tea service, swimming pool, and more.  The hotel was recently updated in 2015, updating rooms and public spaces.

I stayed one night in a Superior King Room, booking at an advance purchase SPG rate, which included Wi-Fi.  I arrived at the hotel mid morning.  Bellmen offered to assist with my luggage but I only had one bag, which I was able to manage myself.  I was guided to the check-in area, which had no line.  The front desk agent acknowledged my SPG membership and thanked me for my loyalty.  Luckily my room was ready and I was off to my room.  However, the key did not work and I had to go back to the front desk to reactivate it.

The room was a bit dark upon entry.  It also did not help that the room category I booked faced the courtyard, which does not allow a lot of natural light compared to the rooms facing the street.  It did not matter to me as I was only there for one night and had a few meetings during the day.   All rooms will have high ceilings, creating a sense of space.

The rest of the room was updated and elegant.  There was a leather wardrobe along with a leather desk and new 48 inch flat screen TV.  By the bed was an updated phone that had iPhone and other phone chargers.  The bathroom was very bright and elegant.  There was branded complimentary water along with an old-fashioned leather suitcase that was used as storage for slippers, a hairdryer, and extra towels.

When it comes to hotel facilities, the gym was small yet efficient however I can imagine it gets busy with 500+ rooms and suites.  The pool was great but like the gym will be busy with families.

Check-out was quick and efficient.  The agent that assisted was very friendly and conversed with me about my stay and travel plans.

Overall, I had a fantastic stay at The Palace Hotel.  I wish I had more time to try the other amenities such as the bar or restaurant.  I would stay at the hotel again but probably choose a room that faced the street.

  1. I have stayed at the palace hotel a few times. I think its a dated hotel with a lot of cave rooms.(no view,no balcony) This is ok for business but not for leasure. For gods sake, you are in beautiful San Francisco by the bay. Why waste your valuable spg points on this hotel.
The Weston for spg is nice
Hyatt has balconys overlooking the ferry building and the embarcadero
Hilton has modern rooms with fantastic views.
I like the intercontinental on Howard st. Its modern with a great view. great upgrades, great location
The Mark Hopkins is Far better than the Palace If you like historic dinosaurs the view is better.
The Mark is a great destination at xmas time. Their seasonal brunch at the Top OF THE MARK is fantastic!
