If you’re a SkyMiles member and have logged into your SkyMiles account lately to view any of your upcoming itineraries, you’ll notice that Delta has rolled out their new upsell program which is designed to upsell passengers to either Comfort + and First/Business Class online, both on the reservation page as well as on the seat map screen.

The first upsell option is on the reservation screen, where you can view the itinerary with the option of upgrading to Delta Comfort+ or Business Class, as in the example of a Los Angeles-New York (JFK) trip this summer.

However, there is yet another option to upgrade, this time it’s in the seat selection page when viewing the seat map. Delta thinks that you may not be happy in the cabin you booked, and since you can view the seat map for the premium cabins, you may want to move up. Playing around with a few reservations, it appears that you can upgrade on a segment my segment basis, with a discount for upgrading for all your flights.

Another feature with this, if you are a Medallion and got upgraded to Comfort +, but you’d rather prefer that exit-row aisle seat you’re able to downgrade yourself back to the Main Cabin now. Sometimes it’s worth forgoing that free drink on an hour flight to have an exit row all to yourself.

Delta First Class

Less Complimentary Medallion Upgrades

Indirectly, with Delta’s latest upsell initiatives, this means that there will be even more ways to upgrade to first class in advance for paying passengers, meaning less seats for complimentary upgrades for Medallion members.

Delta already has aggressive first class ticket prices domestically, meaning more often than not first class is full of paid passengers. What’s unclear with this new feature, is if the price will change depending on how far out, and if they’ll start to lower the upgrade fee closer to a trip. Once we have more data, we’ll be able to find out. 1. If they can get $900 one way LAX-JFK in business (as an upgrade), loyalty be damned. I can’t blame them for that.

  2. I am only seeing a 5% discount on some summer flights. Regular price shown underneath with a strikethrough.
