Hertz and American Express have partnered up to allow American Express Membership Rewards Points to be used for rental cars. In this post we’ll illustrate how members can redeem their Membership Rewards Points for rental cars with Hertz.
To reserve your car rental, you can redeem your Membership Rewards Points that you can earn from one of many American Express credit cards:
- Business Platinum Card from American Express
- Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express
- American Express Gold Card
- Business Green Rewards Card from American Express
How To Reserve Hertz Rental Car
Step 1: Log-In To your American Express Account
Log-in and navigate to Use Points>Travel>Car & Rail
Step 2: Select Certificate Option
Then select which Hertz certificate option you prefer.
- 5,000 points for $50 off
- 7,500 points for $75 off
- 10,000 points for $100 off
- 20,000 points for $200 off
Even though the redemption value isn’t great at $0.01 cents per point, the certificates can be issued as an eGift. That means you can get started booking your Hertz rental.

Seems like a better option would be to get a cash back card like the Barclay Arrivals rather than “wasting” your Amex points on Hertz
PWAC – Totally agree. I won’t be using this option, but some folks may find value.
Might as well just redeem MR points for statement credit if you get the same redemption rate.
Yes, it’s a great option to have. I sometimes use dollar bills when I run out of newspaper kindling for my fireplace.
One thing that’s important to call out is that the certificate can also be used on the TOTAL car rental charge. With the other partners, the certificate is only used to deduct the “Standard Rate” but cannot be used for taxes or additional extras. For example, if your car rental is $35/day and taxes are $20 for a total of $55, then other car rental companies will only let you apply a $50 certificate to the $35 charge so you’d still owe another $20. However, Hertz will allow you to apply the $50 certificate to the FULL amount so with a $50 certificate, you’d only need to still be $5. It’s a good added value.
