One of the things we like most about travel is connecting with friends and seeing new places. But traveling also takes you farther away from home and without a doubt you’re bound to miss big events with friends and family.

If you are a road warrior I’m sure you’ve missed birthdays, Super Bowl Parties, and other life events. It’s not fun when you are in a hotel room wishing you were somewhere else, especially for a Birthday.

So it’s nice when a travel provider goes out of their way to recognize your big day. Marriott sends a nice note and awards you with a free night stay credit. Alaska Airlines offers a 5% off coupon to use towards future travel.

Westin Birthday Present

We had to delay Birthday celebrations at home recently due to a trip to the west coast. I arrived late to this particular Westin and proceeded to the check-in desk.

After taking my credit card and assigning a room the front desk agent said he’d be right back. When he returned he handed me a small box and a letter from management.

I thought this was a nice little surprise gesture on the part of hotel management. Here they are recognizing an elite members Birthday, likely from the date on my profile, with a small box of chocolates and a welcome letter to the hotel.

Bottom Line

This Westin Birthday Present of chocolates and welcome letter could have never replaced a Birthday night away from home, but it sure was a nice gesture on the part of hotel management.

I often enter my Birthday month and day into my loyalty program account. It’s worked out in the past with discounts from Alaska, free night credits from Marriott, free rental car days from Alamo, bonus points from Hertz and double credits from the old AirTran program.

Have you ever received a surprise birthday present while traveling? It’s never fun missing out on events back home but these little gestures sure are a nice little surprise.

  1. My birthday is on December 25th. We were staying at the Sheraton Towers in Hong Kong and on Christmas Eve they delivered a small choclate birthday cake to our room. Very nice touch!
